Medicaid expansion was associated with a lower uninsured rate among young Americans, according to a study from the Urban Institute, a left-leaning think tank.
The study examined how the ACA’s Medicaid expansion affected uninsured rates among adults ages 19 to 25 from 2011-18.
Three findings from the study:
1. Uninsured rates among young people fell by nearly half between 2011 and 2018. All states saw declines, but states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA saw the largest reductions.
2. Overall, the study found Medicaid expansion under the ACA was associated with a 14 percent decrease in uninsured rates among young adults.
3. The decreases varied by population. More Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black young adults, young adults ages 22 to 25 without a college degree, and young adults in low-income houses saw reduction in uninsured rates after Medicaid expansion.
